The research, in collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic, evaluated the Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement Programme (MBWE) for its effects on psychological wellbeing and related attributes, including intrapersonal and interpersonal mindfulness, emotional regulation, self-compassion, and compassion towards others.
The MBWE stands out from conventional Mindfulness-based programs (MBPs) by emphasising an appreciative approach, a novel form within the MBP spectrum aimed at enabling individuals to surpass mere baseline quality of life towards achieving a state of flourishing. This contrasts with the traditional restorative focus of MBPs, which primarily aim to restore individuals to a baseline level of wellbeing by addressing mental health concerns.
Key findings from the research include:
1. Significant improvements in:
- Psychological Wellbeing
- autonomy
- environmental mastery
- personal growth
- positive relationships
- purpose in life
- self-acceptance
- Emotional Regulation
- Self-Compassion
- Intrapersonal Mindfulness post-program
- detachment from the mind,
- body-anchored presence,
- attention to and awareness of the other person, and
- mindful responding
- Interpersonal Mindfulness post-program
- observing
- describing
- acting with awareness
- non-judging
- non-reactivity
2. Benefits were sustained at a 1-month follow-up, demonstrating the lasting impact of the MBWE program.
The results of the research will be documented and published in a scholarly journal.
